We run virtual and in-person workshops in our area for children ages 8 through 13 years that teach them the basics of drawing comics, creating a story, sharing their experiences, and developing their artistic and creative skills. We believe in empowering youth to make more stories of diverse people visible in public life, in our libraries, and in our bookstores, that are not always a part of mainstream culture, we can empower children and young adults to express their unique identities and experiences. We are inspired by the incredible energy of recent graphic novels like Art Spiegelman’s Maus, Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, Malaka Gharib’s I Was There American Dream, Jerry Craft’s New Kid, Cece Bell’s El Deafo, Raina Telgemeier's Sisters, Gene Luen Yang’s American Born Chinese, and Victoria Jamieson and Omar Mohamed’s When Stars Are Scattered, among other works.
